      Getting around Wellington

Wellington is a compact and very walkable city, and it’s easy to get around using buses or ride services like Uber. The Kelburn campus is conveniently accessible from the city centre by:

  • Bus (frequent services from the city centre): https://www.metlink.org.nz/services

  • Uber/DiDi/taxi (typically under NZD $15 ≈ USD $8)

  • Walking (about 15–30 minutes uphill, for those who enjoy a scenic walk)

  • More details about the conference venue will be provided closer to the time.

Staying anywhere in the city centre (Wellington Central / Te Aro area) works well, with easy access to campus via the options above.

       Recommended accommodation

Budget-friendly options:

  • Haka House Wellington

  • The Marion Hostel

  • Travelodge Hotel Wellington

  • ibis Wellington

  • Trinity Hotel

  • Gilmer Apartment Hotel Wellington

  • Mövenpick Hotel Wellington

  • Astelia Apartment Hotel

  • James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor

  • Novotel Wellington

Many hotels in central Wellington are within ~0.3–1 km of Kelburn and provide easy access to the university.

Getting from Wellington airport to the city centre

Wellington Airport is only about 6–8 km from the city centre, so getting into the city is quick and straightforward. Here are the main options:

Airport Express Bus

  • The most convenient public transport option. Nearest bus stop is in the airport car park, just outside the terminal exit.

  • Route number AX towards Wellington Railway Station. Buses run between 5:30am and 9:55 pm and run at least every 15 minutes between 7:15am and 8pm.

  • Travel time: ~15–30 minutes, depending on traffic.

  • You can pay onboard by cash or card; the fare is NZD $11.5 (~USD $7).

Regular/non-express bus

  • An alternative to the airport express bus that is at least 60% cheaper and almost as convenient as long as you have light luggage and it is not raining.

  • Credit or debit card fare to the city centre is NZD $3.22 between 9 am and 3 pm and after 6:30 pm and NZD $4.60 between 7 am and 9 am and between 3 pm and 6.30 pm Remember to tag off with the card that you used to pay as you leave the bus otherwise a penalty fare is charged.

  • Nearest bus stop is Hobart Street at Broadway, just outside the airport, approximately 650 metres/8 minutes' walk from the terminal exit. This stop is located at the closest end of Hobart Street, just up from the intersection with Broadway, on the western side of the street. Take the zebra crossing over Broadway to reach it.

  • Route number 2 towards Karori. Buses run between 5:46 am & 11:06 pm and run at least every 16 minutes between 7:06 am and 8:06 pm.

  • Journey time to the closest part of the city centre is approximately 20 minutes (depending on traffic).

Uber / DiDi / Taxi

  • Widely available right outside the terminal

  • Travel time: ~15–20 minutes (traffic-dependent)

  • Cost: usually NZD $18–35 (≈ USD $10–20)

  • Note: taxis are generally significantly more expensive than Uber and DiDi for the same journey

Supershuttle

  • Super Shuttle offers a convenient shared transfer between Wellington Airport and the city centre, with door-to-door service. It runs 24/7, can be pre-booked online, and is generally cheaper than a taxi, with fares to the downtown typically starting around NZD $18–25.

Rental Car

  • Available at the airport, though not usually necessary if you’re staying in the city

Overall, the Airport Express bus or an Uber/DiDi are the easiest options. Wellington is compact, so once you’re in the city centre, most places are within walking distance.
